Assignment 1 - HW (30 points) & EC (30 points)
Due: Saturday October 13th 2012 (in case the HOL site goes down)
Send your completed assignments to: [email protected]
DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS, you can submit this any time from August 19th onwards
Please send the HW and EC in separate emails. For HW you can pick any questions you would like. For EC please do 30 further points worth (this lesson there are only 30 further points worth as the number of codes introduced is limited).
The subject of your e-mail should have the following format: CC1 - HW1 - HOL ID (for homework) and CC1 - EC1 - HOL ID (for EC). For example, for my student ID this would read: CC1 - HW1 - ma607 or CC1 - EC1 - ma607
Bear in mind that if there's a spelling "mistake" in the answer I expect it in your homework *g* As I'm often encoding quotes I figure if I throw in spelling mistakes it's a good way to check people are decoding it properly!
If you require help / further hints as to where to go with the HW feel free to contact me (email/IRC/HOL message). This will not incur a points penalty, however obviously it will take me a bit of time to respond (ideally within a week) - please take this into account when working out if you need an extension :)

- Caesar (please state the nature of the shift, e.g. "plaintext A --> ciphertext E"
- Random substitution ciphers 1 & 2 (HERE & below)
Q3. (15 points)
Decode the following. Please split the plaintext up into words, include any spelling mistakes in your email (i.e. don't correct them!)
a) Atbash

Now that I know I'm not
All that you got
I guess that I
I just thought maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let's raise a toast
Because I found someone to carry me home
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun.
(We Are Young, Fun)

Q5. (20 points)
Decode the the following and tell me who the each famous quote comes from. One uses a Caesar cipher of unknown shift, the other an Atbash cipher. Split the plaintext into words. Include any spelling mistakes in your email.
The two phrases combine to make one quote from a Harry Potter movie so if you want a hint - try to identify and decode the Atbash one first!
